U Springs

A U spring also known as V spring, meander spring or a cantilever spring is curved in a U (or V) shape to provide a constant radial or axial force. This design is useful to seal parts that require extra stability due to pressure and/or constant liquid flow.

Not to be confused with spring clips which are usually C-shaped and use tension.

Materials

U springs are designed to maintain consistent pressure on seals, even with temperature changes that cause materials to expand or contract. They are typically made from:

  • Stainless steel: recommended for U Springs used in environments prone to moisture or exposure to corrosive substances because it resists rust and maintains its integrity over time.
  • Carbon Steel: For applications where strength matters most, carbon steel offers high tensile strength that helps U Springs hold up under significant force.

Common Applications

U springs are used to hold seals firmly in place such as in hydraulic and pneumatic systems. The sealing force ensure pressure is maintained, preventing any fluid from escaping. A leak can reduce the machines performance or even cause it to fail.

U Spring Manufacturers

Unlike coil springs, which are better suited for absorbing shocks, U springs are made for consistency, helping to keep components in the right position and under the right amount of pressure, reducing wear and tear. Special alloys are sometimes used when specific conditions, like extreme temperatures, need to be addressed.
