Nothing says more about a business than that first instance when you walk through the door and get a glimpse of their corporate DNA.

The Beckenham office of European Springs & Pressings has recently renovated their reception space creating a new dedicated design office, boardroom and business environment, that reflects corporate brand values.

Stuart McSheehy, Managing Director of Beckenham says: “We’ve all heard the old saying “first impressions mean everything”. We’ve been at our current address since 1996 and despite investment and huge technical advances in our software and hardware, our reception space didn’t deliver the exciting memorable and immersive experience that reflects who we really are and our work ethos.”

One of the key elements of the renovation was a dedicated design space, specifically for customers.

McSheehy continues: “Design engineering is a highly creative discipline that draws on knowledge of manufacturing techniques, product development, technical design and rapid prototyping to bring new innovations to market, and to improve existing products and the processes used for making them.

“Our new design hub offers a whole new level of integration with our customers specifically for these purposes, offering an enclosed workspace where confidentialities of product design and innovative solutions can be securely shared and developed.”

Display cases highlight the diversity of products made across the group and offer a ‘shop window’ to customers enabling them to appreciate the breadth of work available through Lesjofors.

The Beckenham factory will soon be renovating further with a new factory extension planned for the summer, offering an additional 30% operational workspace.

European Springs & Pressings has always been aware of the transformative impact of new technologies, continually monitoring hardware and software developments and assessing whether it could give the group a competitive edge.

A recent investment, making the most of the latest digital technologies managing the day to day running of the business, has empowered staff in the Cornwall factory to rise to the challenge that improvements are perpetual.

Introducing FactoryWiz live, a monitoring and data collection system, streaming live data on large projection screens on the factory floor, has enabled operating personnel to meet their daily targets with far higher efficiencies.

 

Michael Gibbs, Managing Director of Cornwall says: “FactoryWiz monitoring is a powerful CNC machine tool data collection system. The on-premise intranet solution, provides software to drive all dashboards, automatically e-mail historical reports with real-time status of manufacturing assets and process, and can be accessed by me anywhere in the world. Having ‘on site’ real-time access to production levels whether I’m in the office in Cornwall, visiting clients or working abroad is very beneficial.

Providing complete shop floor visibility through full machine/event monitoring, the 60 staff based in Redruth are embracing this new “Smart Factory”, where software systems monitor physical processes and present real-time information allowing everyone involved to make better decisions based on the statistics they are seeing live.

Gibbs continues: “Visualising the critical machine data in real time via interactive charts and graphs has enabled our front line managers to receive the insight they need to streamline their work and improve operations, whilst giving senior management the real-time visibility and reporting metrics we need.”

Further to this, European Springs and Pressings is soon to replace their time and attendance and HR processes with a new cloud-based system. Staff are able to go online to clock in and book holiday times. Eliminating the dated paper-based system is expected to enhance efficiencies across all personnel integration.

In some cases, you may need to opt for custom spring design, but this is a process that takes time. Of course, it is worth the wait if you require a bespoke spring or wire form. However, if your requirements can be met by springs we already have in stock, you can also benefit from a quick turnaround as you cut out the process needed to create and produce a brand-new design. If you have tight deadlines for your project, this can be hugely beneficial.

Significant investment in one of the world’s leading suppliers of automated storage and retrieval solutions is delivering multiple benefits to customers, staff and management at the Beckenham factory of European Springs & Pressings.

A newly installed, fully integrated mechanised storage system, supplied by Kardex Remster, working alongside the materials planning system, has delivered 60% more space and greatly improved stock accuracy and efficiencies that will benefit customers for years to come.

Stuart McSheehy, Managing Director of European Springs & Pressings says: “Financing five machines to take care of our 3,500 different line items has been a rewarding experience for many. Our 152 strong team are incredible but we are only human after all and the occasional human error does impact on efficiencies.

The automation of our inter-logistics has not only reduced our pick times by 90%, it’s eliminated all stock accuracy errors, provided an additional 20% capacity and further enhanced our competitive edge with long-term cost savings for our customers.”

A number of new machines including a new coiler, hydraulic press and a Bruderer power press have also been installed in the Beckenham factory with a new extension, offering 30% more capacity, planned for launch in the Summer.

A newly opened Huddersfield logistics centre for European Springs & Pressings has enabled the leading spring manufacturer to significantly expand its catalogue range, launch a new delivery service and commit to being one of the largest suppliers of stock springs in the UK.

Purpose built new premises and supporting infrastructure systems has enhanced the inventory of catalogue items, expanding the volume on the shelves, making it now possible for European Springs & Pressings to develop their extensive catalogue of over 12,000+ lines of spring and gas spring products.

Michael Gibbs, Managing Director of European Springs & Pressings says: “The recent development of the purpose-built Yorkshire office and warehouse was instrumental in refining our business strategy for our stock springs. Previously importing batches of stock springs from our parent company’s factories in Europe was directly impacting on our customers due to carriage fees and courier times and was affecting our performance in this highly competitive market.

This significant investment now allows thousands of catalogue items to be made available, placing us back in the heart of this demanding sector. Shakespeare said “all the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players” and for the Cornwall factory of European Springs & Pressings, this couldn’t be more true.

The National Theatre, world-renowned for creating award winning theatre productions, is staging Shakespeare’s Macbeth and approached the Redruth factory to develop springs that enhanced the sound production of the performance.

Simon Allen, Instrument Maker and Sonic Bricolage for Macbeth at the National Theatre says: “We were looking to procure some large tension and compression springs to use as musical instruments, played on stage by two professional musicians. I approached European Springs & Pressings with the need to develop a bespoke solution.

Built into the infrastructure of the stage set, the springs are struck, bowed and scraped with amplification. Although there are instances of car springs and extension springs being used for sound effects, bowing springs is a rarity; and with the right specifications we’d achieve a unique sound quality.”

Michael Gibbs, Managing Director of the Cornish factory says: “Our springs and wire forms are used across multiple industries for multiple purposes from automotive to shipping, oil rigs to the medical industry but this really is a first. We’ve had springs featured in the windows of Liberty of London, we’ve been part of art installations and we’ve formed part of the architecture across key landmarks but being used for sound is a whole new world of productivity. The spring really is the most versatile of products and its engineering is at the heart of so many sectors.”

Macbeth, played by Rory Kinnear, and Lady Macbeth played by Anne-Marie Duff, is directed by the Director of the National Theatre, Rufus Norris. It opens on 26 February running until 23 June, playing live in cinemas across the UK on 10 May.www.nationaltheatre.org.uk. www.europeansprings.com
