The Many Uses of Disc Springs

Disc springs are sometimes known as Belleville washers in honour of their inventor, Julian F. Belleville, and these cone-shaped components are used in a variety of functions. They excel under conditions that require a very high load within compromised spatial constraints, and can be used in utilities where a standard coil spring would be largely unsuitable. Exhibiting capabilities including a high tolerance to fatigue and a low tendency to creep, disc springs have seen use in artillery pieces, firearms, locking devices and even Formula One Cars.

One of the great benefits of a disc spring is its ability to be stacked alongside other such springs to modify their total capabilities. Stacking all of the springs along a similar orientation will create a stiffer joint, whilst alternating the springs will result in a far lower spring constant, and mean that they will be displaced in an altered fashion when subjected to a heavy load. Disc springs have been in use for more than 150 years, and their unique niche means that they are likely to be utilised for many years to come.

These particular springs have recently been discussed due to their presence in a new high powered right angle drill. This drill was specially created to maximise performance qualities within a relatively small form, and to meet this end disc springs were chosen as they offered a greater load capacity compared to an equivalent coil spring. This particular device was notable for subjecting the disc springs to such an unusual level of stress that a lead engineer needed to design bespoke springs to solve the problem. The customised appearance of these disc springs allowed the drill to continue to function at peak performance, and also saved the manufacturers a good deal of money.
